Oral rapamycin does not improve survival of M. tuberculosis infected aged mice and minimally impacts lung lesions. Rapamycin treated (N = 37) and untreated (N = 13) old HET3 mice were infected with aerosolized M. tuberculosis and euthanized when removal criteria were met (A). Lung sections were semi-quantitatively evaluated for necrosis, neutrophils, and lymphocytes, and the proportion of mice was determined for each category (B). Examples of the microscopic lesions are shown, magnified 200 times: necrosis (C); neutrophils (D); lymphocytes (E).
