"When Prof. Calogero Caruso of the University of Palermo, Italy, founded Immunity & Ageing 20 years ago, the journal was a pioneer in two distinct ways. First, it was an early adopter of the Open Access academic publishing concept as a member of the stable of journals established by the visionary Vitek Tracz in London, UK, in 2000 (BioMed Central, deriving from the original notion of PubMed providing open access to scientific publications). Second, it focused exclusively on the impact of ageing on immunity and vice versa at a time in the development of the field when there was relatively little interest in this topic. Thus, for example, searching for “immunosenescence” in PubMed yields 36 hits for papers published in 2003, whereas 20 years later this number is >300. The influence of I&A and the field is reflected in the increasing numbers of submissions to the journal and citations of published papers, with a first 2-year Clarivate impact factor of 2.3 in 2013, peaking at 9.7 in 2021. It has been my privilege and pleasure to have helped guide the Journal over the entire 20 years of its existence, first as Deputy Editor to Prof Caruso until 2018, then as Co-Editor-in-Chief with Dr Nan-Ping Weng, NIA, Baltimore, USA (2019-2023) and currently with Prof. Daniela Frasca (University of Miami). The support and encouragement of the I&A journal management team, led by Dr. Britta Müller (Heidelberg) since 2019, has been instrumental in ensuring the success of the journal, which I firmly believe will continue to be influential over the next 20 years."
Prof Graham Pawelec, Co-Editor-in-Chief, University of Tübingen, Germany

"In the last 20 years, Immunity & Ageing has become one of the leader journals in the field of immunosenescence, publishing articles that focus on the relationship between ageing on immunity. The journal grew in its editorial standards and value to the field under the leadership of Prof. Calogero Caruso (University of Palermo), founder and Deputy Editor, 2004-2018, and of Prof. Graham Pawelec (University of Tubingen) and Dr. Nan-ping Weng (National Institutes on Aging), Co-Editor-in Chief (2019-2023). This year I joined Prof. Graham Pawelec as Co-Editor-in Chief of the journal, an enormous honor for me, as I see throughout the years an increase in the publication of high quality papers with a significant impact in this field of ageing and immunity. I am sure that the journal will continue to increase in strength in future years. A special thanks to the journal management team, led by Dr. Britta Müller (Heidelberg). Happy Anniversary!"
– Prof Daniela Frasca, Co-Editor-in-Chief, University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, USA

"I go baNew Content Itemck in time with the sweet melancholy with which one looks at past events when we are older. It was 2004 when I was seized by the fervent desire to embark on an editorial initiative in the field of my scientific interests, which were and still are ageing and immunology. So, I seized the opportunity presented by a new, innovative online publishing group, BioMed Central, and proposed a journal that could publish papers on the immunology of ageing, hence the name “Immunity & Ageing.” Thus, in October 2004, PubMed published the presentation paper for the new journal, which already in its title made explicit the "philosophy" of the journal: “Immunity & Ageing: a new journal looking at aging from an immunological point of view.” In the following years, I began my promotional activities, which later led to the first Impact Factor, thanks in part to a good number of waivers provided to me. As a result, many researcher friends, including Graham and Daniela, published excellent and highly cited papers."
– Prof Calogero Caruso, Founding Editor, University of Palermo, Italy

"I joined thNew Content Iteme editorial board of Immunity and Ageing in its early days following an invitation from Professor Calogero Caruso. I became the associate editor for reviews around 2017 and served as co-Editor-in-Chief from 2019 to 2023. I have witnessed Immunity & Ageing evolve from a new journal to a mature one with an expanding number of readers and outstanding authors over the past years. I am quite honored to have been part of this process and will continue to support the growth of Immunity & Ageing. I am confident that an even better future lies ahead for both the field and the journal."
– Dr Nan-Ping Weng, former Co-Editor-in-Chief, NIH, USA

Roberto Paganelli"Immunity and Ageing has provided terrific insights and inspiration to my research since its inception in the last quarter of 2004 under the guidance of Prof. Calogero Caruso. The invitation to become a member of the editorial board by the actual Editor-in-Chief came as an irresistible offer to contribute to the development of the field and promote the unique role of the immune system as the integrating hub for neuro- enteric and exposome derived stimuli, modulating the aging process and influencing the development of age associated diseases."
– Dr Roberto Paganelli, Editorial Board member, Università degli Studi G. d'Annunzio Chieti e Pescara, Italy
